My Best of Travel: Beauty, History and Architecture
Having travelled extensively for over twenty years, am sharing below my list of top cities I found outstanding in Beauty, History and Architecture.
1. Switzerland
Switzerland is one of my favourite and one of the most attractive vacation destinations in the world. Every part of the country is beautiful in its own way. Head to Gstaad if you want to ski in style or to Lucerne if you want to just soak in the beauty of one of Switzerland’s most popular cities. Interlaken, Grindewald, Zurich, Geneva, Basel, Speiz, Mount Titlis, Zermatt (Matterhorn peak – on Toblerone Bars) Gruyere village, Lauterbrunnen - the list of places to see and take in the magnificent beauty is endless!
2. Prague
Stay near the old town square to be walking distance from all things beautiful in Prague! St. Henry Tower is the tallest free-standing bell tower in Prague and the view from the top is absolutely breath-taking! What you can do next is take a walk on the Charles bridge which is the historic bridge that crosses the Vltava river, which is the longest and the most beautiful river in Prague. There’s a lovely open-air Starbucks there as well, so you could sit there and sip on your coffee while staring at the magical view!
3. Rome
The massive stone amphitheatre known as the Colosseum was commissioned around A.D. 70-72. It is one of my most favourite of all the ancient monuments that I have ever been to! Another beautiful place to visit in Rome is the Trevi Fountain, which is called Fontana di Trevi in Italian. It is considered a late Baroque masterpiece and is arguably the best known of the city’s numerous fountains. In Rome, one can spot an ancient monument relic at pretty much every other street corner! The Roman Pantheon is the most preserved and influential building of ancient Rome. It is a Roman temple dedicated to all the gods of pagan Rome. A twenty minutes bus ride takes you to Vatican City – the smallest country in the world! Head to St Peter’s Basilica to witness the splendour of the Sistine Chapel painted by Michelangelo in 1508. Built upon the tomb of St Peter, this splendid church is a magnificent must-see for visitors to Rome. There is so much to see, and so many photo opportunities, so be sure to do your research so that you don’t miss anything.
4. Austria
Vienna
Where traditional and modern collide, Vienna is the perfect place to explore contrast. You will also find many beautiful, historic and splendid palaces here. The Belvedere Palace and the Schonbrunn Palace are a must-see in Vienna. Head to the Goldenes Quartier for a dose of luxury shopping. The 19th district, located near the Vienna Woods, is famous for rustic wine taverns. Or just walk around the city soaking in the charm. It is hard to spot a corner in Vienna that is not pretty!
Salzburg
The Sound of Music Tour in Salzburg is a must. While that’s definitely something to check out, it isn’t the only attraction in Salzburg! The funicular cable car up to the Hohensalzburg Fortress is extremely scenic. Mirabell Palace and Gardens are one of the finest palace grounds in Austria and are a flower lovers’ delight. Music lovers will love touring Mozart’s Residence, and fashion gurus will thrive in the shops on Getreidegasse.
5. Myanmar: Yangon
In Myanmar, the elegant Shwedagon Pagoda is Yangon’s most famous landmark. The massive 99 meter high gold plated pagoda with the diamond studded spire set on top of a small hill in downtown Yangon dominates the area and is visible from much of the city. After dark there is a mystical atmosphere with the pagoda lit up by spotlights. The grandiose structure and its beauty left me stunned, because it was absolutely mesmerising!
